The sword has a metal sheath, a cloth bag cover, and a leather cover/case. The bottom of the sheath is decorated with a a cross, a knight, and an axe. In the middle of the sheath, the name W. J. Pennell is embossed. Above that, there is a design with a cross and crown. Around this are the words "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life." Above that are two metal loops attached to the sheath. Above them, a design of two crossed axes with a horn and over them a vest. Above that is a knight on the ground looking to the sun.
