The sword has a metal sheath, a cloth bag cover, and a leather cover/case. The bottom of the sheath is decorated with a a cross, a knight, and an axe. In the middle of the sheath, the name W. J. Pennell is embossed. Above that, there is a design with a cross and crown. Around this are the words "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life." Above that are two metal loops attached to the sheath. Above them, a design of two crossed axes with a horn and over them a vest. Above that is a knight on the ground looking to the sun. On the sword handle, there is a knight's head on the base and a hilt with the same cross crown design as before. There is ametal chain running from the knight head to the hilt. The middle of the handle is either bone or plastic. On one side it has a laurel design surrounding the initials W. J. P. with a crown above it. On the other side there is a cross design. On the blade, on one side, there is the makers mark "the Henderson Ames Co Kalamozoo Mich." There is a floral design and a horse and knight design. There is also a free mason symbol. On the other side of the blade is the name W. J. Pennell. There is also a floral design, the cross and crown design, and a knight design.
The leather case has a leather a metal handle. The leather has an embossed floral design. There is ametal tag on the flap which says "W. J. Pennell, Lewiston, Maine." On the case the name of the company is also listed.
